FAQ

What is the difference between the AirWeave and AirFlex masks?

Are the filters compatible with all masks?

No, we have designed each filter range to be compatible only with its mask counterpart.

The AirWeave Copper Filters are only compatible with the AirWeave Merino Mask range and the AirFlex Filters (both the botanical range and blank range) are only compatible with the AirFlex Mask range.

Is the size guide the same for both the AirWeave and AirFlex?

Yes. Both the AirWeave and AirFlex masks and filters use the same size guide. You can view our size guide here.

Are your face masks compliant in my country? Do they meet standards such as N95, KN95 and FFP2?

Globally there are many different standards for non-medical face masks. The AirWeave mask range has been thoroughly tested and meets the regulatory requirements and standards in most regions across the globe for non-medical face masks.

Meeting non-medical standards means that the mask is certified to to be used in non-medical settings such as flights, public transport, shopping centres and work places.

The AirWeave range has been certified to meet the below international standards in their respective regions:

  • United States: ASTM-F3502-21 Barrier Face Coverings
  • European Union: CWA 17553:2020 Community Face Coverings
  • United Kingdom: BSI Flex 5555 Community Face Coverings
  • France: French Decree n° 2021-76 Masque Grand Public
  • China: T/CSTM 00387-2020 Daily Reusable Protective Mask & FZ/T 73049-2014 Knitted mask

We meet the regulatory requirements of many other regions, some which don’t have formalised standards.

How does your filtration performance compare to N95, KN95, EN149, FFP2, FFP3, KF94 or AS1716 standards?

There are various international standards all of which have differences in their test design and methodology. Our products are certified by FDA registered and ISO 17025 Nelson Labs using ASTM-F2299 standards. The test has been customised to make it more akin to real life use, most notably using non-neutralised particles.

Our AirWeave and AirFlex filters have achieved over 99% filtration efficiency using particles sized PM0.3. Why this particle size? PM0.3 is the most penetrative particle size (MPPS), meaning it represents the worst case scenario. Larger particles such as PM2.5 or smaller particles such as PM0.1 will be therefore have a  higher filtration efficiency than 99%.

Can I wear your masks on flights and public transport?

What tests have your masks undergone?

Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE)

Our tests have been completed by FDA registered and ISO 17025 accredited Nelson Labs, the leading global provider of microbiological laboratory testing for MedTech and pharmaceutical companies.

Our filter media has been tested against a particle size of 0.1μm (microns) and received an average filtration efficiency of 99.50%.

Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE)

Our filter media has been tested in compliance with ASTM F2101-19 and EN 14683:2019, Annex B. The filter media received a bacterial filtration efficiency greater than 99.80%.

Viral Filtration Efficiency (VFE)

Our filter media has been tested in compliance with US FDA good manufacturing practice (GMP) regulations 21 CFR Parts 210, 211 and 820. The filter media received a viral filtration efficiency of 99.99%.

Copper Infused Anti-microbial Fabric

We have received additional test results for the copper-infused antimicrobial material which we use to make the carry bag. We sent this material for independent testing to ensure it meets a high standard of antimicrobial performance. STS is a leading independent testing agency and is accredited ISO17020:2012, the highest qualification level of inspection bodies.

  • Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) >99%
  • Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) >99%
  • Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) 98%.

Are your masks medical devices?

Our masks are not defined as medical devices and are to be used for source control only. Different regions have different standards, requirements and product classification systems for non-medical masks.

For example, for countries which are members of the European Union this product is classified as a reusable Community Face Covering under CWA 17553:2020. For the United States this product is classified as a reusable Barrier Face Covering under ASTM F3502 - 21. What mask size is best for me?

Please refer to our size guide for instructions.

How do I assemble the mask and ear loop adjusters?

Assembly instructions can be found on the inside of the product packaging. Alternatively, you can watch this video which walks you through the steps.

How should I store the mask?

Avoid storing the mask in humid areas or in direct sunlight. Each mask pack purchase comes with our purpose built, antimicrobial carry bag. We recommend keeping the mask in this bag when not in use.

Can I wash the mask?

The outer skin can be washed like an item of clothing. Machine wash using cold soapy water. We recommend rinsing the stainless steal valves and silicone components by hand. We do not recommend washing the filters as this will affect filtration performance, rendering them ineffective.

Can I wash the carry bag?

Yes, you can hand or machine wash the carry bag.

How do I know when to change my filter?

How long the filter lasts for depends largely two factors:

  1. The level of particulate matter being filtered, as this will clog the filter over time.
  2. How many hours in the day you are using the filter, the more hours will mean the more particulate matter the filter collects.
For high levels of pollution and for over 3-6 hours of daily use, we have found our filters are effective for around 2 weeks. There is no exact formula for how long the filter will last, however we recommend replacing the filter once breathing through the filter becomes increasingly difficult or the filter is visibly dirty for hygiene reasons.

Can I wash my filter?

We do not recommend washing the filters as this will affect filtration performance, rendering them ineffective.

Do you offer worldwide shipping?

Yes! We offer worldwide shipping to most countries around the world! Please check your shipping rates and timeframes at checkout.

Will the mask fog up my glasses?

Early in the design phase, we received feedback to ensure that our masks were able to be worn with glasses. The reason why glasses tend to fog is because exhaled air is escaping toward the the nose area of the mask, which means the mask is is not fitting to your facial contours. We have a firm but flexible nose wire built into the filter to ensure that it is able to fit a wide range of facial contours. This prevents exhaled air from escaping and fogging up your glasses. We have also sourced special nose foam from Japan which aids in creating a firm seal on the bridge of the nose, preventing outward air leakage which can fog up glasses. Finally, our dual valve design allows for greater volumes of air to be released from the valves, and not near the top of the mask which causes glasses to fog.

Does your product come into contact or contain latex?

The handling of the filters and skins, as well as during the assembly phase may involve latex. We also cannot guarantee that our masks will have no elements which contain latex. Those who have an allergic reaction to latex are advised to not purchase this product. We are sorry about this.

Can I disable the exhalation valves?

Yes! Our stainless steel valves are designed to provide a high level of breathability to the user. Our masks also come with extra silicone components, providing the option to block the exhalation function of the two stainless steel valves. If you are feeling unwell, we recommend blocking the exhalation valves in public spaces.

Can I use your filters with other masks?

No, our filters are custom designed to only be compatible with our mask and cannot be used with other masks.

Are the ear loops comfortable when worn for extended periods of time?

The adjustable ear loops have been designed to provide a customised fit without straining the user’s ears, so that the mask can be used for long periods of time.

Can your mask conform to the bridge of my nose to reduce air leakage?

Yes! We have a firm but flexible broad span nose wire built into the filter to ensure that it is able to fit a wide range of facial contours. This reduces both inward and outward air leakage. The inside of the filter is cushioned with memory nose foam, to ensure a comfortable and an effective seal.
